Melkuin Movers – Moving tips

There aren’t a lot of people who like moving house.  It’s time consuming, stressful and sometimes back breaking work. At Melkuin Movers, we want to make your job a little easier with these helpful moving tips.  Not only does this help you to be a little more organised, it also helps you save money by reducing the amount of time our removalists need to be on-site.

Pre-packing

Always ensure you have plenty of time to prepare for packing.  Moving can be very stressful if you have limited time to prepare so the more organised you are the smoother the whole process will be on the big day. Using second hand boxes are a great idea, however make sure you use good quality boxes for more delicate belongings.

We usually suggest to allow up to 2 hours per room if you are doing your own packing.  For example, if you have a four bedroom home with a lounge room and dining room, you would need the following time:

  • Four bedrooms: 8 hours
  • Lounge room: 2 hours
  • Dining room: 1 hour
  • Kitchen: 2 hours
  • Garage: 3 hours
  • Bathrooms/laundry/linen: 3 hours

Have an extremely clear area for rubbish and charity donation items.  Please remember that you should only give items to charity that you would use if you were given something second hand. Anything that you would not accept second hand, please send it to the rubbish pile.  Allow a few hours to go to the rubbish tip and call your chosen charity to collect any items you wish to donate.

If you don’t have time to pack up yourself, remember that Melkuin Movers offer a pre-packing service. Let our professional team of packers assist you.

What do I need for my move?

There are a few things that you will need once you start packing to move house.  We suggest the following for a three bedroom home:

5 – Big tea chest boxes
20 – Small tea chest boxes
2 – Portarobes
2 – Rolls of clear tape
1 – Tape gun
1 – Pack of Fragile stickers (fine china)
1 – Roll of Bubble wrap (electronics, photos etc.)
1 – Permanent marker
3 – Rolls of butchers paper/newspaper

Quick labels

Coloured stickers are a great idea for labelling boxes when moving.  The last thing you want is to be standing in between two operators who are constantly asking where you want the boxes placed when you get to your new location.  Place stickers on each box and print out A4 signs that can be placed in each room so that our removalists can match the stickers to the rooms.  This is especially important when there are multiples of the same rooms such as bathrooms, bedrooms and living rooms.

You can download a PDF template here for the A4 signs and box labels:

Please also ensure that you place fragile stickers on any boxes that contain breakable items so that we can take extra special care with them and load them appropriately into the truck.

Loose items

Try and pack all loose items in boxes e.g. bedside drawers, bathroom accessories, kitchen utensils etc.

Before our operators arrive, it’s also a good idea to unplug any electrical items so all leads are packed and ready to go. This saves time and keeps the cost of your move to a minimum.

Remember, the more you do helps minimise the cost and time moving.
